the project
The Hodler project started in late 2017 when we were living in a small student apartment in Ljubljana. Dealing with an ordinary drying rack was a daily challenge for us at the time. The damn thing was always in the way, a pain to move around, it even rusted and was irreparable. While pondering how to overcome these challenges, the idea for Hodler, a modern take on the laundry hanger, came to mind.
After a year of computer-aided drafting and design, concept testing and 3D printing at home, the first prototype was built. It was inspired by and it improved upon a twelve-pointed star geometry concept that popped up on a web search result. The prototype was named “Hodler”, as the main function of a laundry hanger is to hold clothes, in a similar way as people “hodl” their cryptocurrencies (or at least did during the mad crypto boom in 2018). In the years to follow, iterations on materials, connections and the fold/unfold locking system were implemented and tested countless times.
Currently, there are more than fifteen Hodlers out in the wild, providing pleasure to the users and feedback to the designer =). To this day, this remains a completely non-profit, free-time, hobby endeavour.
